18 Apr - Biomedical Asia 2008 Sets New Records

Largest biomedical event in Asia concludes after 4 days of high level intellectual exchange and networking

Singapore, 18 April 2008 -
A record 1,200 visitors and participants attended Biomedical Asia 2008 from 14-17 April at Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The event included over 600 delegates and 200 speakers, including over 30 venture capitalists with a combined fund value of more than US$12 billion. These included Novartis Venture Fund, Lilly Asian Ventures, Coastview Capital and JAIC Asia Capital Pte Ltd.

During the opening plenary, the three keynote speakers - Mr Gordon Binder of Coastview Capital, Professor Philippe Kourilsky of College de France and Dr Ansbert Gadicke of MPM Capital, discussed several topics during their keynote addresses. These included market trends and drivers of the biomedical industry and crystal balling future growth, emerging biomedical innovation from Asia and its impact, as well as the evolution of the global biotech capital market and how Asia fits into the equation.

In addition to the six main conferences, seven industry summits and masterclasses, and event exhibition, delegates also had a chance to view the state-of-the-art Biopolis, Singapore's flagship biohub. They were given the opportunity to gain insights into Singapore's biomedical industry capacity and capability - from research and development to manufacturing and healthcare delivery.

"It was very exciting for me to see the biotech developments in Asia, especially in Singapore, and how these developments impact the global biomedical sciences industry. BioMedical Asia 2008 was very well managed and I will definitely come back next year," said delegate Hermann Tsherrig, Head of Process Engineering at Bioengineering, a Swiss company.

Another highlight of Biomedical Asia is the Awards and Gala Night organised by BioSingapore. PWG Genetics Korean Ltd brought home the Best Innovative (Private) Start-up award, while the Most Successful Partnership award went to Crystal Genomics. HealthStats International Pte Ltd is the winner for Most Important Technology Development in BioSciences, while Maccine Pte Ltd is recognised as the Best Performing PreClinical/Clinical CRO.

"The successful staging of the inaugural BioMedical Asia augurs well and lays a strong foundation for future installments of this international event. It also provides added impetus to our efforts to attract, bid for, anchor and grow business events in key strategic clusters that inject vibrancy into Singapore's economy. BioMedical Asia 2008 provided a key platform for us to showcase Singapore as a premier Business Travel and MICE destination to the international participants, profile our strong knowledge-based economy, while solidifying our position as a thought-leader in Biomedical Sciences in Asia. The congregation of leading experts in the field and international speakers at the event has catalysed intellectual exchange which will propel Singapore's Biomedical Sciences industry forward in the years to come," said Mr Aloysius Arlando, Assistant Chief Executive, Business Travel and MICE Group, Singapore Tourism Board.

BioMedical Asia is set to return to Singapore next year and is scheduled from 16-19 March 2009 at Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre.
