Academic Grants

Through the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), A*STAR extends funding support to excellent research that generates knowledge and capabilities vital to Singapore's vision of becoming a premier centre for biomedical research and development.

The four types of grants available for research programs from basic to clinical research are:

  • Project Grants provide seed funding for young and promising investigators, who are at the early stage of their career, to engage in research for up to 3 years. Grants will also be extended to established investigators moving into new fields and whose research proposals do not require 5-year funding

Singapore's first research institute, the IMCB, develops & fosters a vibrant research culture for biological & biomedical sciences. It will support the development of biotechnology for the human healthcare industry in Singapore

  • Program Grants provide funding for an extensive program of research by established investigators for up to 5 years, in the first instance. The program should represent an extension of existing research and may comprise sub-sections that are thematically inter-related. An example of this would be the grant calls made by the Singapore Cancer Syndicate.

  • Co-operative Grants fund interdisciplinary collaborative research involving two or more groups for 5 years, in the first instance. The collaboration should focus on a common theme and leverage on current strengths of each individual research group

  • Core Competence Grants provide funding for a cohesive research unit where investigators engage in research that develops and/or strengthens capabilities in areas that the Council considers of strategic importance. Funding will be for 5 years, in the first instance

These funds are available to those Principal Investigators in Singapore's public research sector who are not employees of BMRC-funded research institutes.
