Business HQ

Out of the 7,000 multinational companies already in Singapore, 60 percent manage their regional operations from Singapore. Of these, more than 75 percent are using Singapore to cover Asia-Pacific, including the Greater China region.

One of the first MNCs to take advantage of these benefits is Quintiles Transnational Corp. It became the first contract research organisation to set up in Asia when it opened its office here in 1995. Quintiles now has its Asia-Pacific headquarters, a central laboratory and Asia's first dedicated clinical trial supplies hub based in Singapore. From Singapore, the company manages and monitors clinical trials across the Asia-Pacific, with more than 40 trials in progress.

These statistics are not surprising considering the city-state offers global connectivity, world-class infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce and a pro-business environment. Not to mention factors specifically conducive for biomedical sciences development such as favorable a clinical trial environment and easy access to patients in Asia.

Another MNC that has decided to augment its activities here after setting up its regional headquarters is Siemens Medical Solutions. The global healthcare equipment supplier aims to establish more high-end, knowledge-intensive activities here. It is keen to forge collaborations with local hospitals and research institutions. Its regional headquarter here offers technical, logistics and financial support to the Asia-Pacific. The company also operates a regional spare parts centre here.

This growing base of international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in itself will draw more pharmaceutical and medical technologies to Singapore's shores.
